Artist's Description

Winter Island Lighthouse, also known as Fort Pickering Light. This is one of three lighthouses that are called Rangle lighthouses. The other two are Baker Island Light which is outside the harbor and Derby Light which is inside the Harbor on Derby Wharf.
This lighthouse was maintained by the Coast Guard for many years while the Island was a Coast Guard Base.
I used to watch the PBY's come down the ramp and into the water and then taxi off in the harbor to take off on a search and rescue mission or just for training.
Once the Coast Guard turned the island back to Salem, (1969) it became the responsibility of the town of Salem to maintain the Island with Forth Pickering which dates back to the Revolutionary War, and the Lighthouse which was first built in 1871.
