Sentinel Pine Covered Bridge
This covered bridge is actually a walking bridge in the Franconia Notch state park in New Hampshire. It received its name from the ninety-foot-tall pine tree that stood at the edge of the chasm. It was blown down in the hurricane of 1938 and a workman took a sixty-foot section to make into a walking plank to cross the gorge on. They took other trees that had been blown down to make the footbridge over the original pine and preserve it. The bridge is put together with wooden pegs. The shingles were made by John G. Welch and Old Joe Poloquin who was also known as Indian Joe. The sentinel-covered bridge was transferred to the state of New Hampshire in 1948. If you go down the steps further down the walking trail you can get this image of the bridge from downriver.
