Dawn on Salem's Winter Island. Sea-smoke was present in small wisps on the surface of the water. Salem Massachusetts Winter Island is the home to Fort Pickering and Pickering Lighthouse which is at the mouth of Salem Harbor. Pickering light is a guiding light since mariners will line up on Baker island light and Pickering light to find the harbor mouth and once inside the harbor they have the red beacon of derby light at the end of Derby wharf. Seasmoke is a whispy fog mass that rises off the ocean it occurs when cold air absorbs moisture as it passes over a warmer sea. The excess moisture unable to be absorbed by the cold air, so immediately condenses into fog. At the same time the air is warmed by the sea causing the dew point to rise and the fog at sea level disperses.
The warmer air rises and is cooled again by the higher air so causing more fog to reappear. This fog effect resembles smoke, quickly forming, dispersing, and reforming. Lasting only a short time unt...
