Artist's Description

Derby Wharf Lighthouse is 800 feet from shore. This is the longest Wharf in Salem and Elias Hasket Derby is reputed to be the first Millioniare in the United States. This was in 1799 when the average wage of a sailor on one of his ships might have made $3.00 a month with a bonus if he was lucky at the end of the voyage. The house of Simon Forrester is just to the right of the lighthouse and Benjamin Crowninshield build the brickhouse to the right of that. In 1819 the Federal Government built the Custom House with the large stair case running up the front. and a few years later Joseph True carved an eagle for the roof. The original eagle sits on the second floor today. To the viewers right again is a mustard yellow house which is called the Hawkes House, named for Benjamin Hawkes. But it was Elias Hasket Derby that built it in 1780 but his family never moved in and instead moved up to Essex street where the more affluent merchants were living.
