The brick and stone lighthouse is outside Portsmouth Harbor. Nearby is Woods Island and Kittery Maine on the other side of the Piscataqua river and Portsmouth Harbor. Nearby is Portsmouth Harbor lighthouse which helps sailors navigate their way into the inner harbor. The lighthouse was known first as "Whales Back" when it was established in 1820.
